Mattress Frenzy: The Hottest Startup Industry Of The Year?

Image
This year has been a breakout year for one of humanity's oldest consumer goods - the mattress. In retrospect, the industry was ripe for disruption. Most mattresses are made by two companies (Tempurpedic/Sealy and Serta/Simmons), resulting in a mattress market that ended up driving prices unnecessarily high for shoppers. Enter the mattress startup, which sells only through its own website to cut out many of the middle-men and pass on huge savings to the consumer. To give you an idea of how much people love the idea, Casper Sleep launched last April and has grown at such a rapid rate that it just raised $55 million from investors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Though Casper is the largest of the mattress startups, a number of other companies have launched thionyl to give consumers some great options when mattress shopping online. At this point these brands all have something unique to offer, and as a result collectively will continue to take away market share...

Keeping Those Bed Bugs From Biting

Image
By JANE E. BRODYAPRIL 13, 2009Throughout my early childhood I was tucked into bed with a gentle admonition: "Good night, sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite." Not that my parents or I had ever seen a bed bug or known anyone bitten by one.But these days this old saying has resonance for many more people than in years past, including those who sleep in expensive homes and four-star hotels. Last month, a family living in a $3 million private house in Brooklyn discarded rooms' worth of furniture, the cushions carefully stand slashed and notes attached saying the pieces had bed bugs and were not safe to take.Had this been the case 40-odd years ago when I became a New York homeowner, I might have had a hard time furnishing my rooms; most were decorated with foundlings, including cushioned chairs. In those days, street scavengers like me had little reason to worry about bed bugs. But the bed bug problem has become so widespread in 21st- century America that The...

Why I get mistaken for being drunk

Image
Sex and relationships for disabled people can give rise to unspoken questions and sensitivities - often among the able bodied. But amid the awkwardness there is humour. The following is an edited version of a monologue by Ruby MacKellar, who has dyspraxia. Everybody had already taken all the good disabilities, so I got left with dyspraxia. Somebody had to have it.It's a developmental, co-ordination disorder - the less sexy cousin of dyslexia. It largely affects motor control and speech, and memory and information processing, so what generally happens is I fall over a lot and I cock everything up. Little things are difficult for me, like clothes, hair and make-up, so I like wearing large, elasticated clothes that don't show I've dropped my dinner down them. I've no excuse for my hair, obviously.I love living alone because of people. And so my favourite activity is sitting alone on the sofa in my pants, watching telly. I can't actually keep pets or houseplants alive,...

northvolt selects north sweden site for mammoth battery plant

Image
STOCKHOLM, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Sweden's Northvolt said on Thursday it had selected a site in the far north of the country for the planned construction of Europe's biggest battery factory as the company continues to seek the billions of euros needed to finance the scheme. Northvolt and others are racing to set up large-scale battery cell plants in Europe, where automotive and industrial firms have so far relied mainly on Asian imports even as demand for electric begins to pick up. The decision on a site for the battery plant was the latest step toward realising Northvolt's ambitious plans though it still has billions of euros in financing to secure. South Korea's LG Chem said last week it will open Europe's largest lithium-ion battery factory in Poland next year, employing 2,500 workers to produce up to 100,000 electric vehicle batteries per year. Northvolt Chief Executive Peter Carlsson said while the plant would be located in Skelleftea and would eventually em...

Anders Behring Breivik trial: Norway killer wanted to ...

Image
By Daily Mail Reporter Published: 06:23 EDT, 19 April 2012 | Updated: 20:18 EDT, 19 April 2012 Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik wanted to capture and decapitate former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland during his shooting massacre on Utoya island, he said. Breivik told his trial he planned to film the beheading and post the video on the internet - as well as kill all 600 people who were at the Labour Party's youth camp on July 22. But Brundtland had already left the area as the far-right fanatic began his shooting spree. The revelation came as Breivik described how he became a deadly marksman by honing his product gun skills by playing the violent Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare computer game. The mass killer even bought a special gun sight used on the game - and attached it to the hunting rifle he used for his deadly rampage on a Norwegian island. Details of Breivik's fixation with computer gaming was revealed after he admitted taking...

Ready, set, paint!

Want to give your kitchen a facelift with out draining your wallet Consider painting the cabinets.Wood cabinet refinishing entails removing the existing paint, sanding the surface (depending on the type of paint you are using) and applying new paint to the bare wood. This cosmetic project revives cabinets that have become scratched, faded or discolored, and breathes new life into an old kitchen. "Refinishing cabinets is a fantastic, cost-effective way to transform the look and feel of a kitchen," says Dan DiClerico, home expert at HomeAdvisor, a remodeling project resource. It's also a fraction of the cost of doing a full kitchen remodel, which runs, on average, $22,632, according to HomeAdvisor. Even replacing old kitchen cabinets with new cabinets starts at about $4,000 for a typical 10-by-12-foot kitchen, according to HouseLogic, an online resource for homeowners. Decorating Your Kitchen in Retro '50s Rockabilly Style Décor

Image
Spice Up Your Boring Conventional Kitchen, '50s Style! Are you tired of your boring, plain-jane modern kitchen? Does it lack the bang and luster that you feel every kitchen should have? Are you a fan of retro style or décor? Well, what about redesigning your kitchen in retro 1950s style? You could have a rockin' red and aqua atomic kitchen...or perhaps even a mid-century yellow & black kitchen? You can make your vintage style kitchen dreams come true...with a little bit of patience and effort. Fortunately for the rockabillies and the fans of 1950s retro style and vintage décor, there are many different product looks that can be emulated and recreated. If you love the vintage 50's look, you should be able to find inspiration all over the internet. Retrorenovation.com is one of my favorite websites to find vintage inspiration for redecorating...or just for contemplating redecorating. There are many other sites out there that provide a wealth of vintage 50's maga...

The Internet and the End of \'Things\' | HuffPost

Image
The "Internet of Things" is everyone's new favorite buzzword. This increasing interconnectedness (is that a word?) will lead to the end of various "things" that at one time were commonplace. In the next twenty years we will see the virtual disappearance of many everyday physical items, including books (more ebooks will be sold in the US next year than paper books), paper currency and ware most single-use consumer electronic (does anyone even need an alarm clock anymore?). Like the remote control (yes, there is an app for that) and business cards (how are these still a thing?), there are many physical items in our lives that will disappear in the year to come. The three soon-to-be obsolete things that I want to focus on are the key, the mail, and physical crime. The Key: I am an angel investor in KeyMe, a startup that makes digital copies of your keys to help avoid lockout charges. I did this even though I believe the decline of the antiquated pieces of met...

How Much Rubbish Is REALLY On Everest? And What Are We Doing About It?

Image
There is a vast amount of mis-information and hyperbole around Everest. One of these is around waste on the mountain. During my ascent of Everest last year someone tweeted me something like "climbers literally have to walk over trash, dead bodies and human waste to get to the summit. " Um… they don't. It's mostly just snow. Yes, the sad truth is that there is rubbish from climbers, and it needs to be managed better, but it's mostly restricted to the camps. For example, at the highest camp, Camp 4 on the South Col at almost 8000m, there are shredded tents and small fuel cylinders frozen into the snow. (There are no abandoned oxygen cylinders anymore, as often reported. The oxygen cylinders are now too valuable to dump. People even try to steal them.) Over the years, a lot has been done to clean up Everest. In the late 1980s and early 90s Everest was indeed a mess. In the early years of Everest expeditions people didn't think about environmental conservation...
