it took the power of batman and playstation vr to turn a skeptic in an almost-believer

Image
I'm Batman. I've waited years —since the release of 1989's "Batman"—to say those words and mean them. Considering that I've spent the bulk of my professional life writing rather than building a superhero's physique, it seemed unlikely, save for Halloween, that such a day would come. It has. Virtual reality, long the stuffof science-fiction filmsand, more recently, cute but largely forgettable cellphone accessories, has arrived. Earlier this year we saw the release of the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive, which makesit possible to put on a pair of goggles and disappear into a digital landscape—as long as you have a high-priced, top-of-the-line computer. Now with Sony's PlayStation VR, an add-onto the PlayStation 4 so many of usalready have hooked up to our TVs,virtual reality is comingto the masses. And it's bringing Batman along with it. The timing couldn't be better. Whether it's the outcome of the political season or simply the results of ...

clear out the clutter: how to put your house in order

Image
Christmas brings clutter and clutter will ruin carefully crafted interiors. What's more, clutter attracts more clutter. The good news is that storage solutions have never been more practical and chic, making a new year clear-out more worthwhile than ever. "Start small," advises Sylvia Bennett, a specialist in clutter management and space clearing. "Begin with one drawer, rather than a whole room or your entire home. Once you've made a start , you will quickly become enthusiastic to tackle more. " Living room "If you can afford it, have a wall of floor-to-ceiling push-click cupboards painted the same colour as the walls," says Romaine Lower, who runs The Clutter Clinic. "This can be subdivided with shelving to accommodate toys, DVDs, books and so on." A quick transformation can also be achieved with a sideboard, such as the Content by Conran Wave Sideboard (£1,595, www. johnlewis. com), on which your telly can sit. Check out the Ba...

How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?

When it comes to finding a mattress that feels just right, there's a lot to consider. Are you large or small? Do you always sleep on your back or do you switch from your tummy to your side? Do you usually sleep alone or with a partner? It's important to think about your answers and then visit a manufacturers mattress showroom like the CJ Mulholland Mattress Factory in Hamilton where you can try out a wide range of mattresses before you buy. Experts agree you should always lie on a mattress for at least 15 minutes before deciding whether it's comfortable or not because some mattresses take that long to conform and adjust to the shape and warmth of your body. It's also a good idea to bring along the pillow you sleep with to make sure you'll still find it comfortable once it's in your home. Firm or extra firm mattresses are good for back sleepers or tummy sleepers because they provide the best support for the spine. Sleeping on a softer mattress can cause the...

Public Outcry Over the Oculus Rift Price Misses the Point

Image
The price of being an early adopter is often very literal - you have to pay a premium to be one of the first people in the world to use new devices - sometimes entirely new types of devices. So the enormous outcry that followed the announcement of the pre-order price of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset was something that was particularly hard to understand. On Reddit, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey wrote that Oculus end is not making money on the Rift, to encourage adoption of "high quality" VR. Unfortunately, while the Oculus team has done a good job of making what appears to be, by most accounts, a groundbreaking product - our own experience with the Oculus Dev Kit 2 was hugely positive - the one area where it hasn't fared so well is in its messaging. When rumours came up that the Oculus could cost $1,500 (approximately Rs. 1 lakh), Luckey responded by saying it would be in the "ballpark" of $350 (approximately Rs. 23,000) - so when the final price of $...

The Ultimate Household/Emergency Flashlight System

Image
Your layout might be different than mine so you can base your layout on the schematic. If you are following mine, there are tons of pictures to follow! Rather than include a giant block of text, read the mouseover text on each of the yellow boxes on the pictures.First add all of the components, and then add wire jumpers to connect far places of the board. Sorry about the pictures, a lot of them came out blurry even though I did multiple takes and picked the best ones. I don't have a good camera or lens for close-ups.Cut the end off yourtransformerand strip the wires. Solder the positive wire to pin 1 (Vin) of the regulator and the ground to a common ground. Hot glue it to the board so it doesn't get ripped out by accident, and add a zip tie for support.Attach the connector for the flashlight to the board. Pin one goes to ground, pin two goes to the cathode of the diode, and pin three goes to the collector of the transistor. Hot glue the connector to the board for support, unl...

inside a storied paris apartment designed by isabelle stanislas

Image
Isabelle Stanislas has a knack for being associated with places inhabited by figures of note. The French designer, new to the AD100 this year, was recently tapped to revamp three state rooms at the Élysée Palace, the official residence of France's presidents. Recent projects include the salon and restaurant at the Château Malromé, near Bordeaux, which once belonged to the mother of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. And the designer herself lives in the former duplex of the legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, on Paris's Rue de Rivoli. "I love being in spaces steeped in history," she declares. The owners of this particular majestic apartment on the Left Bank, Anna Peter Breton and her husband, would appear to have a similar predilection. He is one of France's most successful TV producers; she is a painter, whose canvases are inspired by their travels to destinations like Peru and Kyrgyzstan. They used to manufacturing reside in a 13,000-square-foot house near t...

Photography brought to light at Vivid Sydney

Image
Vivid is an annual ritual for our family. The kids rug up in their warmest clothes, we make pizza and pack it into a big tub, and we bus it into the city to join throngs of people as we're shuffled around the most dazzling parts of Sydney Harbour. This year we're taking the night a bit more seriously - and having a lot more fun. Instead of queuing with the masses for vantage points and capturing the art installations on our iPhones, I feel like we're enjoying an elite experience. We're on a roomy, covered platform high packaging up on the side of the Overseas Passengers Terminal. Right below us, bright neon swings rock gleeful children back and forth at Campbell Cove. To our left is the Harbour Bridge in all it's multi-coloured glory, straight ahead are the radiant sails of the Opera House and in between, ferries, cruisers and a tall ship glide past proudly, just waiting to be captured on camera. We're being looked after by the Canon Collective team, who ...

paracetamol: the pill that kills

Image
Kim Bielenberg on the lethal dangers of a drug found in almost every home's medicine cabinet.Paracetamol is a potential killer lurking in the bathroom cabinet in most homes around the country. It's an important component in a wide variety of over-the-counter drugs, including Lemsip, Solpadeine, Panadol, Beecham's Hot Lemon, Tramil and Hedex among many others. Doctors and chemists have warned that the free availability of the best-selling painkiller in grocery stores, supermarkets and other shops is encouraging more suicides and accidental overdoses. At the Irish Pharmaceutical Union annual conference a week ago, pharmacists called on the Government to control the sale of the drug, because of possible links to suicide. In the US, France and Germany, painkillers containing paracetamol can only be bought in chemist shops. In fact, apart from the UK, Ireland is the only country high in the EU where painkillers can be an impulse buy, freely available at the corner shop, supermar...

use a treadmill dc drive motor and pwm speed controller for powering tools

Image
Power tools such as Metal cutting mills and lathes, Drill presses, bandsaws, sanders and more may require .5HP to 2HP motors with the ability to fine tune the speed while maintaining torque.Coincidentally most Treadmills use a 80-260 VDC motor with a suitable HP rating and a PWM motor speed controller to allow the user to change the belt speed and keep a good constant speed and torque while running on it. There are Commercial DC Motor/PWM controllers available or you can build the PWM circuit from scratch and buy all the components seperately but you will spend a lot of time and money either way. All the parts you need are on the treadmill.Tear your own apart or get one on Ebay.(shameless self-promotion below)Motor/controller combos on EbaySafety and Disclaimers- You should have some k no wledge of electricity and the dangers of household current and know your abilities/inabilities. Serious injury may occur to you or others from use/misuse of these motor set-up. If you are in doubt DO...

Apple plans 3-D cameras for new iPhones - NZ Herald

Image
Apple plans to launch iPhones with a more-powerful 3-D camera as soon as next year, stepping up the company's push into augmented reality, according to people familiar with the plans. The rear-facing, longer-range 3-D camera is designed to scan the environment to create three-dimensional reconstructions of the real world. It will work up to about 15 feet from the device, the people said. That's in contrast with the current iPhone 3-D camera system, which points toward users and operates at distances of 25 to 50 centimeters to power Apple's Face ID facial-recognition feature. Apple's new system uses a laser scanner, rather than the existing dot-projection technology which doesn't work as well over longer distances, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unreleased features. That's just one of many new features product - including a third, more advanced camera, enhanced photo-capture tools and a more powerful chip - that Apple pla...
